Jason Tran

President and Co-Founder

Tell us something about yourself:

A New Jersey transplant moved to Foster City in 2016.  I'm a pharmaceutical professional who works locally in Redwood City. In addition to my professional career, I’m a full time pickleball enthusiast and a USA Pickleball Ambassador for Foster City.

How did you start playing pickleball?

Out of the blue I received a text asking if I want to play pickleball.  My first immediate reaction was “what the heck is pickleball?”.  That following weekend I was introduced to the game and haven’t stopped since then.

What do you like most about pickleball?

The marked improvement to my health!  I also like playing pickleball for the social aspect of the game.  I truly enjoy meeting new players and making new friends.  And best of all, the fun and laughter that we share on the courts!

Why do you serve as President of FCPC?

I serve as President of FCPC because I am a FC resident and co-founded the club with the current Board of Directors. My long-term vision is to build a strong local community with a singular voice to champion and promote pickleball within FC.

Stephanie Tsai

Vice President

Tell us something about yourself:

I grew up in the Bay Area and moved to Foster City in 2021. Besides pickleball, I also enjoy playing the cello, playing board games, and drinking boba!

How did you start playing pickleball?

My partner Trevor and I moved to Foster City in 2021. We drove by the courts and thought the sport looked really fun! Trevor bought us a starter paddle + ball pack from Amazon for my birthday. We went out to open play and have been playing ever since!

What do you like most about pickleball?

I love the different people I've met through pickleball and the open play format. I've made good friends at the Foster City courts, and I'm also able to play with my parents. It's great that I can visit almost any city and be able to meet new people through pickleball!

Why do you serve as Vice President of FCPC?

I want to continue growing the pickleball community at Foster City. I also have several ideas for tournaments and other events that I'm excited to put into action!

Darlene Mar

Secretary

Tell us something about yourself:

Someone said to me: “If you did not make a difference in society, your community, or in someone's life, then the gift of life given to you was wasted.”  I have discovered by just being involved; wow, one can make a difference. My involvement has led me to be an advocate for communities of color, the underserved populations, and small businesses. Over the years, I’ve been honored to receive numerous awards in recognition for my volunteerism in economic development, and community reinvestment. I have served various appointment terms in the public service sector. My background is being a member of several Corporate 500 community advisory boards, state advisory committees and various nonprofits. I am currently a board member of The Greenlining Institute. Currently, I'm involved in energy programs that will provide economic stability and equal sustainability for all communities. In another words, policies that will reflect the real needs for the communities and provide long lasting effects. In the nonprofit world, I’ve created several nonprofits and served in various roles as an officer, chairperson, President, Vice President, mentor, committee member, communication director and advisor. As a consultant for events and nonprofits, I have been instrumental and innovative in producing, directing, and planning many fundraising events i.e. galas, entertainment, and fashion shows. I have participated in public relations platforms and organized community outreach meetings.

How did you start playing pickleball?

Foster City had built a “field of dreams and they will come”. I remembered peering through the wire fence, wondering what those lines on the small courts are for. I kept asking “what is the kitchen?” Shortly afterwards, we had a chance to try indoor pickleball playing with the amazing C. G. (a pickleball coach at San Mateo High School). “One paddle leads to another.” When a friend got a paddle for his birthday, I had to get one too. We would go to the courts when no one was around and tried to play pickleball or to “pick up balls”. A sincere thank you to the people that we had met there at the courts and for encouraging us to continue. After learning the pickleball “lingo”, knowing where the kitchen is, and playing with other players, pickleball became part of my routine.
Note: Doctors are recommending to their patients to exercise and socialize for health and mental benefits. For some people, pickleball could be a Rx answer. For others, it could be the natural progression after years of playing tennis.

What do you like most about pickleball?

1. It is the friendships that are formed on the courts. It is the joy of “dinking” the ball.  One can hear beside the bonging sound of the ball: a lot of laughter and giggles. Often, we hear “was that ball in; are you sure?”  “What’s the score, I forgot?” “I got it and Opps! It’s yours” and “there must be a hole in my paddle”.  Phrases like “good try”, “great setup”, “good serve”, and “good hustle” makes a player smile. It’s fun.

2. It is the community spirit. No age gap. It is people of all ages and skills coming together.

3. It is the “Young at Heart” age 70 plus for a “fun” tournament. It was a counterintuitive approach to prove that senior pickleball players are not to be ignored.

Why do you serve as Secretary of FCPC?

To offer my experiences in assisting FCPC to become a foundation and to support the club’s mission and vision. I want Foster City to be proud of its pickleball program and participants. To have FCPC rank above other pickleball clubs and to be involved in the community. To encourage players to volunteer and/or to donate. To help players understand why pickleball is a way to forget life’s pitfalls, to enjoy the game (win or lose), and look forward to tomorrow. It is making a difference in one’s life in order to make a difference in another.

Treasurer & Founding Team Member

Tell us something about yourself:

I am currently a teacher in the San Mateo Foster City School District.  I was born in San Francisco and have lived in the Bay Area most of my life.  I am married and have one adult child and one dog.  I currently volunteer for the Golden Gate Lab Rescue.

How did you start playing pickleball?

I visited my sister in Kauai and she introduced me to pickleball.  I was hooked after that and usually play multiple times every week.

What do you like most about pickleball?

It is a great workout and it is not boring like other workouts.  Time goes by so quickly when I am playing pickleball.  The social aspect of the game is a big part of pickleball and I have met so many new friends through pickleball.  I love to play in tournaments because I love the competition and I love playing against new people.

Why do you serve as Treasurer of FCPC?

I was asked to serve due to my familiarity with my prior experience working with school budgets, grant writing and fundraising. I currently serve as treasurer of our social funds at my school and I was happy to serve as treasurer of FCPC.

Director of Membership

Tell us something about yourself:

I live to eat. I enjoy trying all different cuisines from around the world but my favorites are Asian food.  Additionally, I’m originally from SoCal, and you will always see me wearing Cal gear.  Go Bears!

How did you start playing pickleball?

Our friends introduced us to pickleball at the San Mateo HS gym, and we got addicted immediately.  The rest is history.

What do you like most about pickleball?

The best part of pickleball are the friendships. We have many new friends who we met through pickleball but hang out outside of pickleball such as having meals together, going to concerts, going on vacations, etc.  Fun times!

Why do you serve as Director of Membership for FCPC?

As Director of Membership, my goal is to help our club continue to grow, and ensure that every member feels welcomed, supported, and engaged. For me, pickleball has opened up a new community of friends, and I want to help others experience the same thing.

Harry Eng

Director of Community Engagement

Tell us something about yourself:

Born in NYC, attended college in New Jersey, and moved to the SF Bay Area in 1999. Here, my wife and I welcomed our daughter in 2003—and we can’t imagine being anywhere else.

How did you start playing pickleball?

I needed a fun, sustainable way to stay active. Some friends introduced me to Pickleball and I signed up for Intro. to PB classes at San Mateo HS with our own Cynthia Gin. Caught the bug and have played ever since.

What do you like most about pickleball?

Pickleball’s magic lies in its accessibility and inclusivity—anyone can learn, play, and belong. More than exercise, it’s about community, camaraderie, and lifting each other up, win or lose, good days or bad ones. Through this game, I’ve found not just competition, but a community of incredible friends I may never have met otherwise.

Why do you serve as Director of Community Engagement
for FCPC?

This role lets me share my passion for community service, non-profits, and Pickleball. As a nonprofit professional, advocate for various causes (Alzheimer's, Poverty Alleviation, Education, etc.), and Rotarian, I’m dedicated to engaging and welcoming more players and strengthening our Foster City Pickleball Club community.

Thank you past board members!
